2 2 | 360º Aon eSolutions Well, it's really two data centers, both in Ireland: the primary, or production, data center and the disaster recovery data center, to which we continuously replicate data. For simplicity, however, I'll refer to it as a single data center, although there are two separate locations. The data center was commissioned in November 2012. Our European Union (EU) data center hosts the applications—like RiskConsole—and the client data for our non-U.S. clients: those in Europe, the Middle East and Africa; Canada and Mexico; South America; and the entire Asia-Pacific region. However, even U.S. clients may wish to run RiskConsole out of the EU data center. We built our EU data center to meet needs expressed by our international clients. Generally speaking, those needs came down to two things: first and most important were concerns about location—that is, where we were hosting their applications and their data; second, EU clients, in particular, wanted a data center physically located in their region in order to maximize performance. Regarding the second need, we optimized performance by building out the EU data center with the same technologies and practices as the U.S data center. That includes full redundancy at all levels, data-at-rest and in-transit encryption, and a fully replicated disaster-recovery site. We've kept the costs of an EU data center comparable to other options by deploying advanced monitoring and automation technologies and by running it without adding net new staff. And when we factored in our international clients' concerns about the location of their data, a second data center made the most sense.
