6 Sessions / Events Lecture Hands on Day 1: Monday, September 22 11:30am–4:30pm Pre-Conference Activities Golf Tournament Join us for an all levels welcome, 18 holes golf outing at Audubon Park Golf course. The city's pulse is the French Quarter, but minutes away lays the exquisite beauty of the Golf Club at Audubon Park. This lavish New Orleans golf course combines over one hundred years of history with the latest in golf course design from Dennis Griffiths, featuring contoured Bermuda fairways, manicured Tif-Eagle greens, four lagoons and exquisite landscaping. The competitive, executive-18- hole course is a par 62, 4,220-yard layout set among hundred year-old oak trees that includes twelve par 3s, four par 4s, and two par 5s. Strategically placed lagoons add difficulty to a course that received a 4-and-a-half star rating from Golf Digest. The magazine also voted Audubon the number 1 course of "Courses Over 100 Years Old" and one of the top public courses in Louisiana. Rental clubs are $45. Guests not registered to attend the Conference may be added for $125. The Roots of Jazz New Orleans: Birthplace of Jazz. Your tour will begin as we travel back in time with an overview of the French Quarter and a visit to the tomb of the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. You will learn how the roots of jazz emerged from Congo Square where natives gathered after required Catholic mass and, with improvised instruments, danced to the music that defined their culture. Learn how that combined with the city's tradition of brass music and strains of French Opera to become jazz. We will visit key places crucial in interpreting New Orleans's unique musical heritage, traveling to St. Augustine Cathedral and the Treme neighborhood, the oldest diverse suburb in North America. Treme is uniquely associated with jazz including Frenchmen Street which has a dozen jazz clubs with nightly performances. We will stop at Dookey Chase's for lunch opened by Leah Chase who took over her husband's restaurant in 1950. Famous for its Creole and soul food, Ms. Chase opened up her restaurant to freedom fighters during the Civil Rights movement. She is considered the foremost authority on Creole cooking. The tour experience will end with a jazz set at Cafe Istanbul, one of the post-Katrina venues built in the hip Creole Bywater neighborhood. Then, sit back and enjoy the music. Make sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. There is no additional fee for Conference attendees to register for the Roots of Jazz tour. Guest not registered to attend the Conference may be added for $125. National World War II Museum The National WWII Museum in New Orleans opened on June 6, 2000, as The National D-Day Museum. Founded by historian and author, Stephen Ambrose, the Museum tells the story of the American Experience in the war that changed the world—why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today—so that all generations will understand the price of freedom and be inspired by what they learn. Designated by Congress in 2003 as the America's National WWII Museum, the campus includes the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion, showcasing the large artifacts of the war and exhibits on D-Day at Normandy, the Home Front and the Pacific; the Solomon Victory Theater, a 4D theater showing the exclusive Tom Hanks production, Beyond All Boundaries; the Stage Door Canteen, where the music and entertainment of the "Greatest Generation" comes to life; the John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion, where staff and volunteers restore artifacts in public view; the American Sector restaurant and Soda Shop—delicious onsite dining options by Chef John Besh; and the new US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center, where exhibits and interactive experiences paint the picture of a nation mobilized for war.
